 Application Instructions

Note: The following instructions augment the instructions found on the actual CalStateTEACH application. Please print this page for your reference.

After completing the online CalStateTEACH application, you will need to provide a number of supporting documents to complete the application. These documents (e.g. transcripts, letters of recommendation, test scores) must be submitted as one complete packet to your Regional Center by the application deadline. Please do not submit individual items. If you cannot send a complete set of supporting materials by the application deadline, you must contact your Regional Center prior to the application deadline to make any special arrangements. Those paying the $55 application fee by check SHOULD NOT submit the check to their regional center (see below for details).

Note: your application is not complete and cannot be processed until the Regional Center has received all required supporting documents.

CalStateTEACH has three Regional Centers: Northern, Central and Southern California. The center to which you submit your documentation depends on 1) the county in which you are employed, if currently employed as a teacher or 2) your county of residence, if not currently employed as a teacher. Go to the Contact Information Page to access the CalStateTEACH Regional Center County Directory. Make a note of your Regional Center's contact information. You will submit/mail all supporting documentation for your application to the Regional Center identified on that page. Additionally, that Regional Center will be your main point of contact for all CalStateTEACH-related questions.

As soon as the appropriate Regional Center has received all of the supporting documents listed below, your application will be reviewed. If you meet all minimum standards, an interview with a CalStateTEACH faculty member in your region will be scheduled.

To ensure that your application is considered for the upcoming term, all applicable supporting documentation must be received by your Regional Center by the application deadline (unless special arrangements are made). Before mailing or submitting your complete packet of supporting documentation, check the list below.

YOU MUST SUBMIT ALL PERTINENT DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW TO YOUR REGIONAL OFFICE TO BE ADMITTED.

  • $55 nonrefundable application fee. You may pay this fee online with a credit card upon completion of the CalStateTEACH application, or you may mail a check for $55 to CalStateTEACH Admissions, The California State University, 401 Golden Shore, 6th Floor, Long Beach, CA 90802. DO NOT use this address to submit the application supporting documentation listed below.
  • One (1) set of official, sealed transcripts from all universities attended.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation.
  • Health Clearance. Tuberculin and rubella clearance is required. The tuberculin clearance must be completed within 6 months of program application and must be valid through the three terms of the program. The tuberculin clearance may be completed at a private physician's office, the County Health Department, or a campus Student Health Center. MMR Immunization Waiver
  • A copy of your Basic Skills Verification indicating a passing score. You may submit any of the following as verification:
    • CBEST Scores (California Basic Educational Skills Test) more info or
    • CSET and Writing Scores (California Subject Examination for Teachers) more info or
    • Pass the CSU Early Assessment Program or the CSU Placement Examinations.more info or
    • Achieve Qualifying Score on the SAT or ACT, more info or
    • College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations more info or
    • Pass a Basic Skills Examination from Another State.
  • Passage of CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers). Applicants who have not yet passed the CSET may begin the program in a pre-professional split-term one. The CSET must then be passed prior to enrolling in term two of the program. more info
  • If employed in a private or public school as a teacher, proof of employment (a contract or letter from your principal) for the current academic year.
  • If employed in a public school, a copy of your permit, credential or certificate authorizing you to teach in California.
  • If you do not have a current California teaching credential or certificate, a copy of your Certificate of Clearance.
  • If you have asked to be admitted on the basis of your employment and you are NOT employed in a multiple subject setting in an elementary school, complete the CalStateTEACH Special Employment Form (available below) to provide an explanation of how your current position qualifies you.
  • If you think your GPA may be below the standards required by the CSU (2.75 for the last 60 semester units or 2.67 overall), you must complete a Petition for Exceptional Admission (available below).
